The Director-General of Health launched four guidelines and standards on stem cell therapy and research during the Seminar on Stem Cell Research and Therapy in Ampang Hospital on 20th August 2009. This timely move is in response to the rapid development and expanding interest in stem cell research. These guidelines are particularly important for clinical research as experimental cell-based therapies need to be conducted as clinical trials with prior approvals from ethics committees. "Before the clinical trials, there must be sufficient evidence to show safety, quality and efficacy. Practitioners must follow strictly to the guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (GCP)".
