The idea for the setting up of the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) was conceived in 1997 and has been operational since August 2000. Located in Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), CRC functions as the clinical research arm of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH).

It is one of several research organizations under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health of the MOH. Other research organizations are the Institute of Medical Research (IMR), Institute of Public Health (IPH), Institute of Health Management (IHM), Institute for Health Behavioural Research (IHBR) and Institute for Health Systems Research (IHSR).

The role of the CRC is to Promote, Support and Conduct clinical research

Acting as a “One-Stop-Centre” for clinical trials, the CRC functions as a provider of integrated clinical trial services to researchers in public institutions as well as to industry. Supported by our extensive information technology capabilities, the CRC is recognized for its track record in completing clinical studies on time, on budget and to the highest ethical standards and, where required, in compliance with GCP and applicable regulatory guidelines.

The Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU) was established in response to the increasing demands for data on disease incidence, prevalence and treatment rates, and patients’ outcomes data including long-term mortality, morbidity and quality of life. The CEU acts as the collaborating unit to clinical investigators to provide the functional capacity for clinical epidemiological research and for the MOH to obtain the relevant clinical epidemiological and statistical information on key diseases in Malaysia.

The CRC also provides professional development courses to train clients, investigators participating in research as well as health professionals who have an interest in clinical research.

The CRC also holds regular Research Consultative Clinics as a service for clinicians working in the MOH to assist in problems faced by clinicians in the conduct of their clinical research.
